DIY Unicorn Fabric Art

DIY Unicorn fabric art

I was excited to participate in the #craftstashchallenge hosted by @craftbash_unglued on Instagram this month. Week 1 was fabric and felt! AND…. fortunately I had a lot of leftover fabric from years ago (yes years!).

It definitely challenged me to think outside the box with things that I already had in my craft stash. I actually had not worked with fabric in a very long time so it was fun to pull out all the fabric I had to get inspired. I ended up making a couple of no sew pillows for my kids. Check them out here on Instagram.

My favorite one was this super easy Unicorn Frame Art that I will be sharing with you today. If you have scraps of fabric lying around and not sure what to do with it, this is the perfect project for you.

Supplies

Unicorn Print out (I got mine from Canva.com for free)
12 x 12 Canvas (I found mine on clearance at Hobby Lobby for $2)
Fabric scraps
12 x 12 White Cardstock
Mod podge
Sponge Brush
ATG or double sided tape
Paint (optional)

I started by making a 12 x 12 canvas on Canva.com and chose a silhouette that worked best for my project. I was making this for my daughters room and she loves unicorns, so I chose the below unicorn that Canva had for free. Honestly, if you are a good artist you could skip this part. You could also lookup silhouettes in coloring books or other pieces of art.

Once you decide what silhouette you will be using print and cut it out. Since I got mine from Canva and had to download it in a PDF format I had to make sure that when I printed it, it would be the size that I needed it to fit on my 12 x 12 canvas. Below are the printing features I used to print on tiles and make sure that it would fit on my 12 x 12 canvas.

Once I printed it out I taped it together and placed on my canvas to ensure that it was the fit that I liked.

At this point I would recommend painting the edge, if you would like or you could also leave it white. We painted after the project was done which was a little tougher.

Next you will need to trace your silhouette on a white piece of 12 x 12 cardstock. Make sure that you trace on the back so when you place your cardstock over your fabric you will not see the trace lines.

Also make sure that the shape is facing the right way, we had to flip ours backwards to ensure that the silhouette was facing the right direction.

This is what the cardstock looked like cut out and placed on top of our white canvas.

You will want to cut strips of your fabric out, does not have to be perfect since you will be layering them on top of each other. Then using the silhouette create a pattern or design before you actually start mod podging. This way you will know where the fabric will be placed and how much fabric you will need.

Tip: Take a picture of your pattern so you can reference it through out the project.

Once you have your pattern it is time to start mod podging!

Using the foam brush layer a small amount of mod podge on the canvas. Press the fabric firmly on top and layer another small amount of mod podge on top. Keep adding one strip of fabric at a time.

Make sure you are referencing your silhouette print out to know where to place the fabric.

Once you have all your fabric mod podged trim any excess fabric using fabric scissors.

This is when I had my mini paint the edges for some added character. As I mentioned before I would recommend doing this in the beginning.

Tip: Originally I had mod podged the 12 x 12 white cardstock directly on top of the fabric. But I DO NOT recommend this mine bubbled up and I did not like the way it looked.

I ended up tracing another unicorn silhouette to put on top of the bubbled up card stock and just used my ATG to adhere it. Since I placed 2 cardstocks on top each other it had a layered look but I liked this over the bubbled look. So skip the mod podge and just use your ATG or double sided tape to tape the silhouette over the fabric.

There was learning curves with this project but you live and you learn right?! I still love how this looks in my daughters room and most importantly she loved it. I hope you give this project a try! It is super easy and I’m sure your little one will love it.
